San Diego Human Dignity Foundation
Announces 2007/2008 Grant Recipients

Local nonprofits serving the LGBT community to receive $36,000 at December 4th event

San Diego, CA, November 27, 2007 – The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) is pleased to announce it is awarding 12 local nonprofit organizations with over $36,000 in grants for its 2007/2008 grants cycle. The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 4th from 2:00 – 4:00pm at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Boulevard in University Heights.

During this cycle, 21 grant applications were received requesting a total of approximately $180,000, a notable increase as more nonprofits seek support for LGBT related issues. This year marks the first time SDHDF is awarding funds from its general endowment, a financial reservoir offering our LGBT community a secure and perpetual source of funding for years to come.

“It is because of responsible philanthropy that we are able to improve the quality of life for our LGBT community with funds from SDHDF’s general endowment,” said Tony Freeman, executive director at SDHDF. “There are many excellent nonprofits that provide programs and services for our LGBT community, and by cultivating a culture of generosity, we will continue to support and grow these resources for the times we need them most.”

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation is the region’s only foundation focusing its funding efforts exclusively on agencies serving the LGBT community. Since its inception in 1996, SDHDF has distributed nearly $800,000 to 45 local nonprofit organizations, and has added 23 donor-advised funds to its roster.

This year’s grant recipients reflect the funding priorities noted in SDHDF’s LGBT needs assessment, including civil rights advocacy and education, improving access to health services (including HIV/AIDS), and addressing the needs of San Diego’s LGBT youth, seniors and families.

With these priorities in mind, SDHDF will be awarding grants to the following organizations: Auntie Helen’s Fluff ‘n’ Fold, Being Alive, Diversionary Theatre Productions, ElderHelp of San Diego, Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego, Lambda Archives, Mama’s Kitchen, San Diego LGBT Community Center, San Diego Youth & Community Services, Special Delivery San Diego, Sun & Moon Vision Productions, and Vista Community Clinic.
